A “Little Cutie”
First Birthday Cake Smash
in Pasadena, California
First birthdays are such a milestone — not only for your little one but for the entire family. One of my favorite ways to celebrate this big moment is with a first birthday cake smash session. These sessions are full of joy, messy fun, and so many smiles that parents treasure for years to come.
For this sweet girl, we designed her cake smash session around the “Little Cutie” theme — a nod to her love of fruit (especially clementines!). Mom came to me with the idea, since the family had already chosen “Little Cutie” as the theme for her first birthday party. Together, we crafted a setup that tied perfectly into her personality and the citrus-inspired details of her big celebration.
To make sure everything was ready in time, we scheduled the session about a month and a half before her actual birthday. This gave Mom plenty of time to use the images for party décor, invitations, and prints to display at the celebration.

Why Choose a Cake Smash Session?
A cake smash photoshoot goes beyond just the adorable pictures (though there are plenty of those!). It’s a way to preserve the wonder of toddlerhood — the curiosity, the giggles, the frosting-covered hands. Parents love that these photos become keepsakes that can be framed, added to albums, or displayed at milestone parties.
For this family, these images will even be printed and shown as part of their first year as parents at their daughter’s first birthday party, creating a personal and meaningful touch that guests will instantly recognize and smile about.

Planning the Little Cutie Cake Smash
To make the most out of every client’s cake smash photography experience, I always guide my clients through planning their cake smash session. The best part of planning is hearing the ideas families bring. For this session:
- The Theme: Mom knew she wanted the “Little Cutie” theme tied to citrus fruits and her baby’s love of clementines. From there, we styled the set with bright oranges, fresh florals, and soft greenery.
- The Outfit: A simple beige romper allowed her baby’s personality (and love for fruit!) to shine while complementing the warm citrus tones.
- The Cake: A sweet, simple orange-inspired cake fit the theme perfectly — ready for little hands to smash into!
- The Bath: We ended with a playful faux splash in the studio tub (with balls instead of actual soapy water to keep baby girl safe at all times), keeping with the light, fresh vibe of the theme.
- The Timing: Scheduling the session 1.5 months before her birthday meant plenty of time to design décor, create invitations, and prepare meaningful party displays with the images.

Pasadena Cake Smash Session
The “Little Cutie” cake smash was everything we hoped it would be: bright, cheerful, and so personal to this family. We began with family portraits, then photographed milestone moments of their daughter surrounded by oranges and greenery, before letting her dive into her cake. She had so much fun exploring the cake and enjoying her favorite fruit — all while showing off her happy personality.
