The Importance of Prioritizing Baby Safety in Newborn Photography

Bringing a newborn into the world is an extraordinary moment filled with joy and excitement. And capturing those early moments of your little one’s life through newborn photography is a beautiful tradition that many families cherish. However, as much as we appreciate the artistry in these tender, heart-melting images, it is crucial to put baby safety first when choosing your newborn photographer.

Understanding the Essentials

In newborn photography, session prices, adorable poses and sweet props can often distract from the vital factor of safety. Unfortunately, not every photographer who advertises newborn sessions understands the specific safety requirements for handling and posing newborns. Consequently, it is essential for parents to research and choose a newborn photographer who prioritizes safety above all else.

Considerations for Newborn Safety

    • Photographer’s Training and Experience: A trained and experienced newborn photographer will know how to handle a newborn safely, from holding the baby to posing them for pictures. Ask potential photographers about their training in newborn photography and the number of newborn sessions they have conducted.  If the photographer’s website has an ‘About Me’ section, their trainings and certifications may be listed there, like we have ours listed.
    • Session Pace: Newborn sessions should never be rushed. A patient photographer will understand that babies need regular feeding, changing, and comforting breaks. They will prioritize the baby’s needs over getting the perfect shot.  If the photographer’s cleaning procedures are not listed on their website, ask them how how they clean their props, outfits, and wraps.  For example, we put anything washable in the sanitizing wash cycle and all items unable to run through a laundry machine goes through our UV C sanitizer or steam sanitizer machines.
    • Cleanliness: The photography studio must maintain high hygiene standards to protect the newborn’s fragile immune system. The photographer should use clean blankets, props, and wash their hands right at the start of the session.
    • Temperature Control: Newborns cannot regulate their body temperature as adults do. Hence, the photographer should ensure the studio or shooting area is adequately warmed to keep the baby comfortable throughout the session.  Photographer should also be able to read baby’s body cues if the enviroment is getting too warm and should know how to properly cool down the baby to a comfortable temperature.
    • Composite Images: Some popular newborn poses, like the ‘froggy’ pose, where the baby appears to be resting their head on their hands, are actually composite images made from two or more photos. These poses are not safe to do without the aid of an assistant or parent supporting the baby at all times. Your photographer should never attempt risky poses without adequate support.
    • Use of Props: While props can make photos more unique and personalized, they should not compromise the baby’s safety. Any props used should be clean, safe, and appropriate for the baby’s size and weight. Avoid photographers who use glass or other potentially harmful materials in their props. Props should always be padded so that baby is not laying on a hard surface or rough surfaces.

The Take Home Message

Remember, a great newborn photographer not only captures beautiful pictures but also prioritizes the safety and comfort of your little one. When you’re looking for a newborn photographer, take your time and do the reasearch as soon as the begining of your second trimeseter. Interview potential photographers, ask about their safety practices, and look at their portfolio of newborn work.

The precious early days of your newborn’s life are fleeting, and the photos you take during this time will be a lasting memory. Therefore, investing time in finding a photographer who values your baby’s safety as much as capturing those adorable moments is absolutely worth it. Don’t compromise on safety for the sake of art or cheap prices; with the right photographer, you can have photos you’ll cherish for many generations.
